El riesgo de contraer cáncer de mama se incrementa con la edad. Para una mujer que vive más allá de los 90 años la probabilidad de tener cáncer de mama durante toda su vida es de 12,5%. Los hombres también pueden desarrollar cáncer de mama, pero su riesgo es menor de 1 en 1000. El riesgo es modificado por muchos factores diferentes. En una porción muy pequeña de cáncer de mama (5%) hay un gran factor de herencia familiar. La probabilidad de adquirir cáncer de mama aumenta con la edad, pero el cáncer de mama tiende a ser más agresivo cuando ocurre en mujeres jóvenes.
